# Custom Surfboards At Whitburn Studio

Whitburn Studio makes custom surfboards by hand near Winchester, Hampshire. Each board starts with a conversation about how the surfer rides, where they surf, what they ride now and what they want from the next board.

## How A Custom Board Starts

You can begin with a Whitburn shape, bring a board or reference you already like, ask James to guide the direction, or start with a rough idea. The custom board brief gives James the information he needs to begin the conversation.

## Process

1. Brief: share the waves you normally ride, the boards you have used and what you want the next board to do.
2. Direction: James works through the intended use and recommends a direction for the shape, dimensions, volume, construction and set-up.
3. Specification: the final shape, dimensions, rails, contours, fin configuration, materials and finish are agreed before the build begins.
4. Build: James shapes, laminates and finishes the board by hand in the Whitburn Studio workshop. Collection or delivery is arranged once the board is ready.

## Materials

Whitburn uses bioscience epoxy across surfboard builds and repairs. PU blanks offer a familiar feel and weight, while EPS can produce a lighter, livelier board. Balsa and agave cores are available where more natural materials are an important part of the build.

Some custom stringers use reject timber from a local sawmill, giving otherwise wasted material another purpose.

## Shapes

Whitburn shapes include the Nudibranch, Eggspiracy, Toecurler, Babushka and Kernel. The shapes are practical starting points, not fixed templates.
