Custom surfboard materials at Whitburn Studio
The materials are chosen around the way the board needs to surf, feel and last.

Bioscience epoxy
Whitburn uses bioscience epoxy across its surfboard builds and repairs. The resin system is one part of the material decision, alongside the blank, stringer, glass schedule and finish.
PU, EPS, balsa and agave
PU blanks offer a familiar feel and weight. EPS can produce a lighter, livelier board. Balsa and agave cores are also available where using more natural materials is an important part of the build.
The best choice depends on the shape, the surfer, the intended waves and how the board needs to feel underfoot.
Stringers and finish details
For some custom stringers, James uses reject timber from a local sawmill. This gives otherwise wasted material another purpose and can create details that are unique to the board.
Colour, resin tint, stringer, tail block and other finish details are worked through with James and agreed before the board goes into the workshop.
