Can a surfboard fin box be repaired?

A damaged fin box may be visibly cracked, loose or missing, but the fitting itself is only part of the repair.

Look for lifted or fractured fibreglass around the box, movement when the fin is loaded, crushed material around the fitting or cracking that extends into the surrounding board.

A fin can transfer considerable force into the board when it hits something. That force can damage the laminate or foam around the fin system even when the plastic fitting still appears largely intact.

For that reason, simply replacing the visible box is not always enough. James assesses the area around it before deciding the appropriate repair.

A loose box, cracked fitting or box that has been pulled partly or completely from the board can often be repaired.

Whether the existing fitting can be reset or needs replacing depends on the condition of the box and the material around it.

The damaged area first needs to be made structurally sound. Depending on the damage, that can mean preparing or rebuilding the surrounding area, resetting or replacing the fitting and adding new laminate around it.

The repaired area is then finished and can be colour matched where requested.

The final price depends on the type and extent of the damage around the box. Send photographs through the repair brief and James will confirm the required work and cost before proceeding.

If the box moves, the surrounding laminate is cracked or the board may no longer be watertight, stop using it until it has been assessed.

Continuing to load a damaged box can allow movement or water ingress to affect more of the surrounding area.

Take a close photograph of the damaged fitting and a wider photograph showing the complete tail or fin area.

If the fin can be removed easily, photograph the box without it. Include a side angle where anything has lifted or moved, and mention whether the board was surfed after the damage occurred.
