Can a snapped surfboard be repaired?
A surfboard that has snapped completely is not automatically finished. Some broken boards can be rebuilt and returned to the water, but whether the repair makes sense depends on the break and the board.
A full snap is a structural repair
A snapped board is fundamentally different from an ordinary ding. The board has broken through enough of its structure for the two sections to separate or lose their original relationship.
Repairing it means rebuilding that damaged section and restoring the board as a usable structure, not simply glassing over the visible break.
What determines whether a snapped board can be repaired?
James looks at where the board has broken, the condition of the foam and stringer, the state of the rails and how much material has been crushed or lost.
A relatively clean break presents a different job from a heavily crushed section or a board with extensive surrounding damage.
Is a snapped surfboard worth repairing?
Repairability and whether a repair is worthwhile are slightly different questions. The board's value, condition, construction and importance to you all matter.
A favourite custom board or shape that is difficult to replace may justify a substantial repair where a heavily damaged low-value board may not. James can help you make that decision after seeing the damage.

What should you do after snapping a board?
Keep both sections and avoid removing loose material that may help show how the break originally fitted together.
Keep the broken areas as clean and dry as practical and photograph the board before attempting any temporary repair.
Photographs James needs for a snapped board
Photograph the complete board and both sides of the break. Include close photographs of the broken foam, stringer and rails where visible.
If the board is still partly connected, do not repeatedly bend the damaged area simply to demonstrate the break. Photograph it in its natural resting position.
